Ok, ok, I have probably offended someone just with this title. But as I was growing up, listening to country music was what old people did. You have to remember that as a child, my perception of old was a relative term. Someone could be considered old if they were in his/her 30’s or 40’s. If he/she was beyond those ages, well, that was considered ancient … but I digress.
Up until the past two years, I did not and could not listen to country music. Maybe it was because of the whininess of the music or the twang of the song. I just couldn’t bring myself to listen to it. Even from a child’s point of view for ages – yes, I fall into that ancient version now – my choice of music has and still is the top 20 of pop rock along with some rap music. This surprises most people.
With the recent cross over of country music into the rock arena, I have started liking certain songs and artists – Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton, Kip Moore, etc. I guess you could say that I am expanding my horizons and learning to appreciate more of what life has to offer. I am choosing to change the radio station in my life.
Darius Rucker is one of the new artists that I absolutely love. He has taken the plunge into a more expansive career by going from lead singer with Hootie and the Blowfish to Nashville as a country singer solo artist in 2008. Now I loved Hootie back when but I did not know Darius had changed to country music until the release of “Wagon Wheel”. Hooray for his transformation – his ability to create his dream!
I think about this when I think about the growth of my business. Am I staying on the only radio station I have loved for all of my life only to be missing what else is out there? Darius didn’t do that. He just knew that the next step for him after the ending of Hootie and the Blowfish needed to be back to his roots of the blues and country. He knew that he had to start over again, bottom up, and was willing to do so. He made it happen when others said he couldn’t.
What is your next step … whether it is in your business life or your personal life? Do you dare to start over and make it happen? For me, this is a no-brainer. As Darius was and always will be a singer, I will always have my core business of building dreams. Just need to cross over into more expansive, more challenging areas, personally & professionally.
