Leading

“Hand’s off … I trust you will do the work”

“Take others by the hand to lead”

“It’s my way, let’s get on board”

These are just a few of the leadership styles that are embraced when it comes to leading. Is one better than another? Or do you look at what each style is saying about what’s on the inside of who you are?

I’ve been working in a coaching group helping me to see my leadership style through the interactions of horses. You see, animals show us who we really are. It’s all about which horse’s behavior do we identify with the most and why we do identify.

I’ve been told by many people, that I am a natural animal whisperer. If you watched last week’s YouTube video, you can see that I take on the role of nurturer when it comes to animals. I was trying ever so gently to shoo the turkey away without harming him. (What I didn’t show or tell you was that I had a pink fuzzy sock in my hand waving it at him to shoo him away … nurture much?!)

Is leading with a nurturing quality a bad thing?

This is the question my coach has me pondering throughout the course of this work. She’s not advising on it one way or another. It’s a question to go deep within – inner reflection – to decide who I truly am and who I am becoming.

Here’s what I have found out about myself …

Nurturing means I want people to like me, to trust me, to know that I will take care of them.

Boom! This realization hit me right in the gut! And I know I’m not alone in this. I see many women leading with this same type of style. Making sure they do what needs to be done along with making sure they are there for others on their team. Or, maybe, it’s leading up by taking care of everyone else … bosses, peers … as this is just who you are … a nurturer.

What I learned in this program was to be me without giving away all of me.

Take up space … don’t be afraid to speak up and tell your truth. Not the truth of what others have told you to embody. Not what the leadership books have said to do. Be seen and heard for your own beliefs and heart felt vision. You have it within you to embrace your own style, your own worthiness in leading without looking like everyone else. Be YOU!

Set boundaries … stop being so concerned about what others think. Put yourself 1st in only the way that you can. Lead with no drama, no ego, no competition. When you choose your worthiness and be YOU, leading intuitively becomes the norm.

Leaders become a great leader through who they are … not by what they do.

What about you? Do you nurture? Do you boss? Do you bring the team along with you?

How do you lead? What strengths do you find in your leadership style along with where can you become more of you?

If you’re ready to dive deeper into leading in your own Unique way, then you’re ready to apply for the Women Leaders Cohort program.
